Mukono High Court Holds First Bar-Bench Meeting

High Court Mukono circuit successfully held its first Bar-Bench meeting in its new premises.

The meeting was chaired by the Senior Resident Judge, Hon. Justice David Matovu. In attendance were Circuit Judges; Hon. Lady Justice Florence Nakachwa and Hon. Lady Justice Christine Kaahwa, the Deputy Registrar, HW Elizabeth Akullo, Research Magistrates and more than 30 Advocates practicing within and outside theCircuit.

Critical issues of concern to the Bar and Bench in the administration of justice were discussed, namely; case backlog in land claims and criminal cases, professional conduct, registry gaps like missing files, delays in transmission of files and pleadings for action; delays in handling of bail applications, conmen and fraud in obtaining Letters of Administration, forgeries of orders of court, etc. 

The meeting resolved to fight corruption and end issues of conmen, all fraud-related cases shall be prosecuted, practice open door policy, reorganize the registry, deploy Assistant Registrar and follow time schedules for trial. The other resolutions being; avoid adjournments, deliver decisions in time, hold many criminal and land claims sessions to clear backlog with visiting Judges and funds be availed for that purpose, inefficient and corrupt Clerks be identified, and adoption of several good practices and innovations from other Courts. 

The meeting agreed to convene bi-annually and have other stakeholder meetings. The three Cs of cooperation, communication and coordination were emphasized.
